There are a number of results coming out this week and the next. We usually hear about what students go through when stressed.
Many parents may not realise that their behaviour has such an impact on children, until exam results come out and a child may not have performed as expected
Lets look at some of the key issues that deeply impact parents as well as children:
Comparing children
Parents sometimes compare siblings or other people’s children when to comes to results.
Why parents do this: They do not take into account that every child is unique with different set of abilities and interests.
Impact: Comparisons can lead to problems like low self esteem, low self-confidence and feelings of inferiority in the child.
Suggestion: it’s important to accept for parents to accept their child the way he/she is.
Unreasonable expectations
Many parents expect that their child should come out with flying colours in all their exams and later get into the best of careers.
Why this happens: These expectations are set without knowing the child’s strengths and weaknesses or interests. Many parents also want their children to fulfill their incomplete career plans.
Impact: Unrealistic expectations build up pressure on children and hamper their academic performance.
Suggestion: Parents need to identify where their child stands in terms of abilities and interests and then set realistic expectations. They need to communicate clearly and mutually plan their child’s career.
We wish you all the best in your exams.
